How to Style a Jumper: Shape, Length and Layering

A jumper looks its best when its shape suits the job you need it to do and its length works with what you wear below it. This guide draws on our founder Hayley Thomas’s advice on knitwear, from choosing the right shape and getting the length right to tucking, layering and dressing a jumper up.

How to choose the right jumper

Knitwear works hardest when you have a few shapes to choose from, since each one suits a different kind of outfit. A relaxed crew neck is the easy everyday knit, a fine roll neck keeps the top half neat and slips under almost anything, and a V or notch neck opens up the neckline. A crew neck and a roll neck are two of the eleven foundations in our guide to building an autumn capsule wardrobe.

The weight of the yarn matters as much as the shape. Fine merino and lighter wool and cashmere blends drape softly rather than adding width, so they suit most body shapes, while the chunkiest knits come into their own once it is properly cold.

Fine knits

A fine knit gives the neatest line of any jumper. The Gwyneth Fine Merino Roll Neck and the Trinny Fine Merino Crewneck are both ultrafine merino, light enough to wear alone or as a layer and not itchy, and the Trinny’s contrast cuff adds a second colour to the simplest outfit. There is more on the yarn itself in our guide to merino wool.

Relaxed crew necks

The Alex Cashmere Blend Jumper is longer and slouchier in the body, the crew neck to wear with jeans, under a blazer or with something sparkly. The Camille Cashmere Blend Striped Jumper is neater and shorter, so it tucks more easily, and its stripe adds interest that does the job of texture too. Our guide to styling a cashmere blend jumper has more ideas.

V and notch necks

A V-neck is worth considering rather than a high neck if you have a fuller bust or broad shoulders. The stylist Claire Lopez likes a piece of jewellery sitting in the middle of the V so the space does not look unfinished, and the Nian V-Neck Cashmere Blend Jumper has a long V that opens the neckline without plunging. Our guide to how to dress for your body shape has more on what suits a fuller bust or broader shoulders.

A notch neck is the halfway point, open at the neck with a soft collar. The Tria Notch Collar Cashmere Blend Jumper adds sporty stripes down the sides and sleeves, a polished nod to a rugby shirt, so it reads slightly smarter than a plain V.

Chunky and cable knits

The Blythe Funnel Neck Cropped Jumper and the Bea Funnel Neck Jumper are the cosy option, our heaviest knits, yet still not too heavy for a blazer over the top. The difference between them is length, because the Blythe is shorter and the Bea a longer line.

A cable knit brings a more traditional feel, the kind of jumper you might picture at the seaside or on a blustery country walk. The Cory Cable Knit Cashmere Blend Button Shoulder Jumper keeps a real cable stitch but a neater fit than a fisherman’s jumper, so it feels refined rather than overwhelming.

How long a jumper should be

Length is what makes a jumper work with the rest of an outfit. With volume below, such as a barrel leg, a wide leg or an A-line skirt, a neater top half is the easiest balance, especially if you are new to wearing volume. Oversize on oversize can still look great if you enjoy the drama.

With barrel jeans such as the Billie Barrel Leg Jeans, a shorter knit keeps the volume on the leg, which is why the cropped Blythe sits better with them than the longer Bea. A straighter jean such as the Emmie Barrel Leg Jeans has less volume, so it can take a chunkier or longer jumper, and the Bea looks particularly good over it.

With wide leg trousers, a knit that finishes at or just below the waist keeps the leg looking long, while a long, slouchy knit can cut it off too low. With a skirt, a shorter knit avoids cutting you off at the wrong point and keeps the eye at the waist. There are more combinations in our guide to styling barrel jeans.

How to tuck a jumper

A tuck brings the focus to the waist, which is why it helps most when there is volume below. A full tuck suits a shorter or finer knit, and even a longer, slouchier jumper can work with a skirt once it is tucked in and the sleeves are rolled to show the line of the waist.

A half tuck is the softer option, with just the front tucked in and the rest of the knit left to drape, which suits a relaxed crew neck with jeans. A small side split helps a front tuck sit without bunching at the sides, and the Tria and the Camille both have one.

For anyone who prefers not to tuck, a cropped knit stops roughly where a tuck would, so it gives the same balance with nothing tucked in. A shorter chunky knit such as the Blythe also tucks in without adding bulk.

What to wear with a jumper

Jumper and jeans works best with a knit that is simple but has a little interest, such as a contrast cuff or a stripe. Navy knits suit a dark rinse wash such as the Frankie Wide Leg Jeans, while sky blue looks particularly good with mid wash denim.

With tailoring, a neat knit balances a wide leg trouser, and for work, knitwear can look as polished as a suit when the colours match, because the eye reads one colour and one texture from top to bottom. A navy knit with navy trousers does this, and layering one knit over another in the same shade feels quietly luxurious.

With a skirt, the aim is to keep its shape visible, so a neat knit works best over an A-line or fit and flare skirt. In autumn a longer skirt also answers the question of tights, since they can go underneath for warmth and barely show.

What to wear under a jumper

A shirt under a jumper makes knitwear feel more polished almost straight away, with just the collar and cuffs showing. The structure of a crisp shirt such as The Perfect Shirt against a softer knit adds interest. Over an oversized shirt such as the Olivia, a slightly shorter knit restores definition and lifts the waist.

Lighter layers work just as well underneath. A white T Shirt under a jumper can do the job of a necklace, and a Skylar Shoulder Pad T Shirt gives the shoulder a little more structure. A fine rib vest such as the Maya can sit under a fine knit with an inch showing at the neck.

How to dress up a jumper

A jumper dresses up more easily than most people expect. For a party, a relaxed crew neck pairs well with something sparkly, and by day a sparkly blouse can show just a little at the neck of a plain knit, for a hint of something special.

A collar showing at the neck makes a jumper feel more formal, but in a soft way. A fine knit is also the easiest base under a blazer, because it does not fight with the tailoring over it.

How to wear a jumper as an accessory

Before it is cold enough for a chunky knit, a jumper can be worn as an accessory, draped round the shoulders in a shade that works with most of your outfits. A lighter knit knotted over the shoulders does the job of a longer necklace, breaking up horizontal lines, and one tied round the waist can stand in for a belt. There are more ideas in our guide to the art of layering.

How to wear a roll neck

A fine roll neck is among the most useful knits in an autumn wardrobe, because it is neat enough to balance wide trousers and fine enough to layer. The Gwyneth is base-layer fine, so it does not feel like too much around the neck, and its optional thumb holes disappear into the rib when you do not use them.

It layers well under a blazer, under a shirt or under a knitted tank such as the Ora Cashmere Blend Drop Shoulder Tank. The contrast of a soft roll neck under a sharp, structured blazer works particularly well, and worn underneath, a roll neck also carries summer dresses into autumn.

Black and navy are the classic colours for roll neck jumpers, with charcoal and camel as easy neutrals. For a pop of colour, the sky blue Gwyneth pairs well with camel, a slightly unexpected combination that gives an autumn colour a bright accent.

How to layer jumpers as the weather cools

Chunky jumpers are tempting in September, but they are really made for the two or three coldest months. Autumn knitwear works best when you move up through the weights, starting with fine merino, then a lightweight cashmere blend, then perhaps a heavier cable knit, and the chunky knit once it is properly cold.

For bulk, a simple rule of thumb is to keep to one bulky piece until the weather turns really cold, and only then to wear two. A cape such as the Audrey Wool Blend Cape leaves room for a chunky knit underneath where a coat would not.

Colour and knitwear

Neutrals are the easiest place to start with knitwear, and a soft stone or ecru knit suits an outfit built on winter whites. For something less expected, sky blue and burgundy together are this season’s easy colour pairing, and every colour in this guide is in the full knitwear collection.

Looking after your knitwear

Good knitwear lasts when it is cared for gently, and for our wool and cashmere blends that means a cool or wool wash, drying flat and never tumble drying. Folding knits, or draping them over a hanger, is better than hanging them, which can stretch them. It is also worth choosing yarns that wash well, because a knit that bobbles badly soon looks tired. Our guide to washing cashmere covers the details, including the light bobbling you can expect in the first few weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How do you style a jumper?

Styling a jumper is easiest when its shape suits the job and its length suits what you wear below it. A neat fine knit balances wide trousers and skirts, a shorter chunky knit suits barrel jeans, and a longer knit works best over a straighter jean.

Should you tuck in a jumper?

A tuck helps when there is volume below, because it shows the waist and keeps the top half neat. A shorter or cropped jumper gives the same effect without tucking, and a half tuck at the front works well on knits with side slits.

What jumper goes with wide leg trousers?

A neat, fine knit such as a merino roll neck or crew neck balances the volume of a wide leg. A jumper that stops at the waist or just below keeps the leg looking long, while a long, slouchy knit can cut the leg off too low.

What do you wear with a roll neck jumper?

A fine merino roll neck balances wide trousers and layers easily under a blazer, a shirt or a knitted tank. It is particularly good under a sharp blazer, where the soft knit plays against the structure, and under a summer dress it carries the dress into autumn.

Can you wear a chunky jumper with a blazer?

Yes, as long as the knit is not too heavy. Even a cosy wool and cashmere blend can sit under a blazer, and a fine roll neck under a sharp blazer is an easy contrast to wear.

What colour jumper goes with everything?

Navy, black, charcoal and soft stone are the most versatile, because they work with denim, tailoring and most other neutrals. A contrast cuff or a second colour round the shoulders adds interest without making the jumper harder to wear.
