Although they once seemed another fashion flash-in-the-pan, cargo trousers have established themselves as a bona fide wardrobe staple. There are luxe versions, tailored versions, balloon versions – there’s a cargo for every contingency.
But perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised at their success because cargos might just have nailed that trickiest of trouser conundrums: bottoms you can wear anywhere, that are comfortable everywhere. The only question really then, is what to wear them with? Here are our top tips.
Best tops for cargo pants
The more relaxed cut of cargo pants means they work best with a form-fitting top. A vest is the classic choice but for these chillier days, a clingy knit is worth considering. To make things really toasty, a chunky jumper will work too, just remember to tuck it in.

A blazer gives cargo trousers instant polish. Add a tucked-in shirt for a work meeting or a neat top for a more leisurely look.
