A Guide to Eclectic Maximalist Style

There’s only one rule for maximalism and that is - there are no rules. Eclectic dressing is all about playfulness, creativity and exuberance without worrying about fashion dictats or the latest trends.

Maximalist style can be a bit intimidating at first, because in a sea of beige, you’re definitely going to stand out. But it’s liberating too - because when there are no rules, you can’t go wrong. You can embrace every colour, print or pattern - and all at the same time if you want.

That’s not to say though, that the carefully-curated capsule has to go. Bringing in a few maximalist elements to a more classic wardrobe can be the most wearable way to bring some fun to getting dressed.

Colour

If you’re just starting to embrace colour though, ease in with tonal dressing - wearing different shades of one colour - or start with paler tones such as pastels. These mix well with earthy tones and brights - for example, try cornflower blue with chocolate brown or beige or with orange for a bigger statement.

Even if you’re going big on brights, don’t forget about neutrals altogether. Grey or beige, and even denim, can really make your favourite colours pop. Just avoid black which tends to have the opposite effect.

Prints

Maximalism is sometimes described as “art teacher on the catwalk” and prints are a big part of that vibe. When wearing prints with plain colour, it can help to pick out one of the shades from the pattern for the other piece. If you’re taking it that extra step and mixing prints - look for harmonising colours or play with the same pattern in different sizes.

Texture

Don’t forget about texture when it comes to dressing to the max. Extra-chunky knits, layers of tulle, big fringes can all bring the necessary drama.

Just one thing

If you’d like to bring a little fun to a classic outfit, you could just add one item that’s more playful than you’d usually wear. Think a quirky handbag, shoes in a bold colour or a statement coat.
